The 1970s and 80s were prime years for collectible glasses. Between the infamous Star Wars Burger King sets, The Great Muppet Caper glasses from McDonald’s, and the Hardee’s Chipmunk glasses, Gen Xers were flush with lead paint-covered drinkware as kids.
In 1985, to promote the new movie The Goonies, Godfather’s Pizza offered four collectible glasses, two for only $1.29 with the purchase of a medium or large pizza. Here’s a commercial showcasing the offer:
And here are is a great close-up photo of the glasses from Twitter user @Bryan5c0tt:
Growing up, the only Godfather’s Pizza we had in our region was inside a gas station. And that gas station was too far away to go pick up an order and expect it to still be hot by the time we made it back home. Needless to say, I did not even get a chance to collect these Goonies glasses at the time. Honestly, I didn’t see The Goonies until about 1987, so these probably weren’t even on my radar anyway.
However, my wife found the Data water slide glass at a thrift store a few years ago and picked it up for me. I didn’t really have anywhere to display my collectibles at the time, so it wound up getting put inside a box and forgotten about until fairly recently. We’ve since moved and I have my own office space, so I sort of rediscovered my one and only Goonies glass, pictured here with my one and only Temple of Doom glass (I’ll get to those glasses in a future post).
I’d really like to collect all four, but they’re fairly expensive on eBay, ranging anywhere between $20 – $30, plus shipping. Of course I’m always on the lookout at thrift stores and antique malls, but so far I’ve come up empty. If I ever get my hands on the rest, I’ll let you know!
